Frequently asked questions
Everything we get asked, answered properly rather than in one line. If what you need is not here, email us and we will add it.
Opening a trade account
Bamboo Panda sells to the trade only. We do not sell to the public and we do not operate a consumer webstore.
Who can open a wholesale account?
Registered retailers, online stores, pharmacies, maternity and baby retailers, gyms and studios, hotels and accommodation providers, and uniform or promotional resellers in New Zealand and Australia.
You will need a New Zealand NZBN or an Australian ABN, a trading address, and either a website or photographs of your retail premises. Home-based online sellers are welcome provided the business is registered.
How long does approval take?
Most accounts are approved within one to two working days. If we need to verify anything we will email you rather than leave the application sitting.
Do you charge to open an account?
No. There is no account fee, no annual fee and no buy-in requirement.
Can I see wholesale pricing before I apply?
Pricing is on application. Once your account is approved we will send the current line sheet as a PDF and a spreadsheet, with wholesale cost, recommended retail and carton quantities against every code.
Do you offer territory exclusivity?
Not as a general policy. For larger accounts placing indent orders we will discuss a limited catchment arrangement on specific styles. Put it to us in writing and we will give you a straight answer.
Ordering & minimums
What is your minimum order?
The opening order minimum is NZ$600 excluding GST and freight. Reorders have no dollar minimum.
Style minimums apply on top of that and vary by range, generally 18 to 36 units per style. The minimum for each range is printed on its page and on the line sheet.
Can I mix colours and sizes within a style minimum?
Yes, within the ratio shown on the line sheet. Most jersey styles run a 6-per-colour or 6-per-size break. Knitwear runs 6 per colour.
What is the difference between stock and indent?
Stock is held at our Auckland premises and ships in three to five working days. Indent is made to your order at the mill, takes eight to fourteen weeks depending on range, and is priced better because we are not carrying the holding cost.
Most accounts run a mix: indent the core colours they know will sell, and top up from stock through the season.
Can I order samples first?
Yes, and we recommend it. Sample orders are charged at wholesale with no style minimum, capped at one unit per style. If you place a qualifying opening order within sixty days we credit the sample cost against it.
Do you do private label or custom branding?
Yes. We can supply with your own neck label, swing tag and packaging from 300 units per style per colourway. Custom colours and custom garment development start at 500 units per style. Development lead time is roughly four weeks on top of the normal indent window.
How do I place a reorder?
Email your codes and quantities to sales@bamboopanda.co.nz, or reply to your last invoice with the changes. We will send a proforma back for you to confirm before anything is picked.
Payment & terms
Four ways to pay, and no portal to log into. Full detail is on the wholesale page.
What payment methods do you accept?
Bank transfer, Wise, card payment online through Stripe, and invoice on approved credit terms. Full details are on the wholesale page.
New Zealand accounts pay by direct credit in NZD to our New Zealand bank account. Australian accounts can pay in AUD by Wise. Our account details are shown on the proforma invoice.
We do not accept PayPal, cash on delivery, or cryptocurrency.
Can I pay an invoice online by card?
Yes. Every invoice carries a secure Stripe payment link, so you can settle it by credit or debit card without ringing us or setting up a transfer.
Card payment carries a 2.9% surcharge on the invoice total. We pass the card processing fee on at cost rather than building it into our wholesale pricing, which would mean the accounts paying by bank transfer subsidise the ones paying by card. Bank transfer and Wise carry no surcharge.
Stripe accepts Visa, Mastercard and American Express in both NZD and AUD. Card details are entered on Stripe's own hosted page and are never seen or stored by us. Payment is usually confirmed within a few minutes, which means we can pick your order the same day.
Why do you use Wise?
Because it is cheaper and clearer for our Australian accounts than an international wire. You see the exchange rate and the fee before you send, and the funds usually land the same or next working day. There is no cost to you beyond Wise's own transparent fee.
Can I get credit terms?
Yes, once you have a trading history with us. The first two orders are prepaid in full. After that you may apply for 30-day invoice terms, which requires a completed credit application and two trade references.
Approved limits typically start at NZ$3,000 and are reviewed every six months.
When is payment due?
Prepaid orders are picked once funds clear and we will not hold stock against an unpaid proforma for more than five working days.
Credit accounts are due on the 20th of the month following the invoice date. Overdue accounts are placed on hold and may attract interest at 2% per month on the outstanding balance.
How do indent deposits work?
Indent orders take a 30% deposit at the time the order is placed with the mill. The balance falls due before the goods are dispatched to you. Deposits are non-refundable once production has started, because the fabric has been cut.
Is GST included in your prices?
All prices are quoted excluding GST. New Zealand invoices have 15% GST added. Australian orders are exported from New Zealand and are zero-rated for NZ GST; Australian GST and duty are handled at your end, and we cover this on the shipping page.
Shipping & delivery
How much is freight?
New Zealand orders over NZ$1,000 excluding GST ship free. Under that, freight is charged at cost, typically NZ$9 to NZ$18 for a standard carton depending on destination.
Australian orders over NZ$2,500 excluding GST ship free. Under that, freight is quoted per order.
How long will my order take?
Stock orders leave Auckland within one working day of payment clearing. Allow one to two working days for Auckland, two to three for the rest of the North Island, three to four for the South Island, and four to seven working days for Australian metropolitan centres.
Do you ship to rural addresses?
Yes. A rural delivery surcharge applies and adds one to two working days. Tell us at the time of ordering so we can quote it properly rather than surprise you on the invoice.
Can I collect my order?
Yes, by prior arrangement from Mount Eden, Auckland. Please agree a collection time by phone or email first. This is a working office and stockroom, not a showroom, so we cannot accept walk-ins.
Will I be charged duty or GST into Australia?
Bamboo Panda ships DAP to Australia. Australian GST and any applicable duty are payable by the importer on arrival. Goods that meet the rules of origin under the Australia New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement may enter at a preferential rate. We supply a declaration of origin, a commercial invoice and a packing list with every shipment so your broker can make the claim. Whether the preference applies to a given consignment is a matter for your broker and Australian Border Force.
What if my order arrives short or damaged?
Check your delivery against the packing slip within five working days and tell us immediately. Send photographs of the carton, the label and the goods. Short and damaged items are replaced or credited.
Product & fabric
What exactly is bamboo fabric?
Almost all bamboo clothing, ours included, is bamboo viscose or bamboo lyocell. Bamboo cellulose is dissolved and regenerated into a fibre, then spun and knitted. It is not a mechanically processed bast fibre like linen.
We say this plainly because some suppliers do not. What you are buying is a regenerated cellulose fibre made from bamboo, and its softness, drape and moisture handling are genuinely excellent.
Is bamboo actually better than cotton?
For next-to-skin garments, generally yes. Bamboo viscose has a rounder fibre cross-section, so it feels softer at the same weight. It absorbs more moisture than cotton and releases it faster, which is why it wears cooler in humidity and warmer in cold.
For hard-wearing outerwear or denim, cotton is the better fibre. We do not pretend otherwise.
Are your garments certified?
We buy fabric that is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which tests finished textiles for harmful substances. Certification is held by the mill against the fabric, not by us, so ask us for the certificate covering the range you are buying and we will send the current one with its certificate number and expiry date.
For babywear, ask specifically for the Class I certificate. Class I is the product class for articles in direct contact with the skin of babies and infants, and it is the one your own compliance file should hold. We will not tell you a range is Class I without sending you the certificate that says so.
If the mill's environmental certifications matter to your buying decision, ask and we will pass on whatever current documentation the mill holds rather than paraphrase it here.
How should the garments be washed?
Cold gentle machine wash, similar colours, mild detergent, no fabric softener, no bleach. Line dry in shade or tumble dry low. Softener coats the fibre and undoes the exact hand-feel your customer paid for, so it is worth saying at the counter.
Care instructions are printed on every garment label and repeated on the swing tag.
How much will it shrink?
All fabric is pre-shrunk before make-up. Our specification to the mill allows no more than 3% shrinkage on length after five washes when the care instructions are followed, and production is checked against that specification before shipment.
Do you supply swing tags and size stickers?
Yes, all garments arrive tagged and size-stickered ready for the floor at no extra cost. If you would rather they came plain for your own tagging, tell us and we will ship them untagged.
About the company
Where are you based?
Our registered office and stockroom is at 340 Mount Eden Road, Mount Eden, Auckland 1024, New Zealand. All New Zealand and Australian orders are picked and dispatched from Auckland.
Where is the product made?
Our garments are manufactured in China. We work with a single partner mill and cut-make-trim facility rather than shopping the order around each season, and we deal with the same production manager we started with.
We are direct importers. There is no agent or trading house between us and the factory, which is the reason our pricing works.
Who owns Bamboo Panda?
Bamboo Panda Limited is a privately held company registered in New Zealand. Alongside its founding shareholders, the company is backed by Unicorn India Ventures, a venture capital firm based in India.
Our company registration and shareholding are a matter of public record on the New Zealand Companies Register, and we will provide our NZBN and company number on request as part of any credit or supplier onboarding process.
How long have you been trading?
Since 2017. We began supplying independent baby and maternity retailers around Auckland and now ship to accounts throughout New Zealand and across the Tasman.
Do you sell direct to the public?
No, and we have no plans to. We will not compete with the stores that stock us. If a consumer contacts us we refer them to their nearest stockist.
How do I get in touch?
Email sales@bamboopanda.co.nz or call 021 0232 1414 between 8.30am and 5.00pm NZST, Monday to Friday. Accounts queries go to accounts@bamboopanda.co.nz. You can also use the enquiry form on our contact page.
Ready to open an account?
Send us your NZBN or ABN and a link to your store. Approved in one to two working days.
